Visitor information for Ludlow Castle

Originally built as a strategic fortress on the border with Wales, Ludlow Castle served as an administrative center and residence for the English aristocracy during the Middle Ages. In the 15th century, it became the seat of the Council of Wales and the Marches, an important institution for governing the Welsh border areas. During the English Civil War in the 17th century, the castle was held by the Royalists until it was captured by Parliamentarian forces in 1646. After the war, the castle gradually fell into ruin.

The castle is stunning, but there is an entrance fee. You can also explore the gift shop at the entrance if you prefer not to enter the castle.

On a sunny day, we visited the castle and enjoyed excellent views from different parts of the castle. Despite being a ruin, it exceeded our expectations and was a highlight of our trip. Exploring the entire castle, climbing spiral staircases, and visiting the charming gift shop with friendly staff made it a memorable experience. The admission price offered good value.

There are concerns about the castle's involvement in supporting foxhunting and wildlife crime, with no visible efforts to address the issue.

A classic castle, although not under English Heritage, offers a small discount for Caravan Club members as it is privately owned.

It felt like being transported back in time while listening to her. We thoroughly enjoyed our two-hour visit.
